Investigation reveals how kids of rich Nigerians become radicalised by the extremist ideology of Boko Haram, join the sect and sponsor militants. Some of them have been caught but have no remorse – and consider claims that the insurgency was poverty-driven laughable.
From the start of Boko Haram insurgency in the north-east of the country the extreme poverty in the region has been considered one of the main factors that driven people to enter this militant sect.
However, journalist investigation reveales that many young people from the wealthiest families in Nigeria have become radicalised by the extremist Boko Haram ideology, joined their ranks and sponsored the terrorists from their own pockets.
That’s why places in Maiduguri where wealthy and influential people stay have never been attacked by Boko Haram militants, despite numerous attacks on Maiduguri, carried out by the terrorists for the last years.
Besides that, there are some secret detention facilities in Maiduguri where children of mostly rich and powerful people suspected in supporting Boko Haram are being kept without trials – sometimes for years.
Major Adegboyega Sam, one of the officers at such detention centre, told that “there are many of them here, children of influential Nigerians, some we have been keeping for more than three to four years. We only await instructions from above; ours is to follow orders.”
For example, when one 21-year old Boko Haram supporter from a wealthy family in Maiduguri was arrested along with his 17-year-old sister for alleged ties with terrorists, they had almost N3 million, several banks’ ATM cards, four smartphones and three laptops.
It was discovered that there are four such semi-juvenile detention centres, catering to some 1,000 individuals aged between 15 and 30 – one in Borno state, one in Plateau, and two more in Abuja. It’s not known under what laws these semi-juvenile detention facilities are run.
There are at least two more widely known cases of radicalised kids from the richest families in Nigeria.
Farouk Abdulmutallab is the youngest of the 16 children of Umaru Mutallab, a former chairman of the First bank of Nigeria and one of the richest men in Africa.
Now Farouk Abdulmutallab is serving a life term in a maximum security prison in the United States for unsuccessful attempt to bomb a US-bound plane on a Christmas Day in 2009.
Ibrahim Uwais, the son of a former Chief Justice of Nigeria, has allegedly left with his two wives and children to join the ISIS.
The Nigerian Watch has reported that the son of Former chief justice of Nigeria Muhammadu Uwais has gone to the Middle East to join the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (Isis) terrorist group.
A security information made available to the Nigerian Tribune last night indicates that Mohammed, the third son of the former Chief Justice of Nigeria (CJN), Justice Mohammed Uwais, who allegedly recently joined terrorist group, Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (ISIS) is a close friend of Farouk Abdulmutallab, the jailed suicide bomber in the United States of America.
Nigeria’s federal government warned that Islamic State of Iraq and al-Sham (ISIS) is radicalising and recruiting Nigerian youths who are studying abroad.
The government asked parents and protectors to monitor their wards closely.
